When you get your new fish, most people just want to throw them into their tank and let them free from the bag. However, this is not good. Fish are generally fairly sensitive about changing water conditions, so you need to make sure that before you dump them into your tank, so properly acclimatize them, this is the Cory Way
Step 1: If you've came from outside, and it's really cold or hot out, I just set the bag in a safe place for 10 minutes just so the water temp somewhat matches your house temp (I don't know if this is neccesary, or even does anything, but it's peace of mind)
Step 2: Make sure the bag your fish is in is somewhat clean, open the top of the bag, and place in the tank. What I mean by the clean bag comment is no visible hair, flakes of stuff, etc.
Step 3: After 15 minutes of the bag being in the tank, put in a 1/4 cup of water.
Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for at LEAST an hour (in my opinion)
Step 5: When you feel that your fish is properly acclimatized, carefully scoop the fish out of the bag, and place in your CYCLED! tank. Make sure you don't get any fish store water into your tank, you don't know what's been in their tanks
Step 6: Keep lights out for about 24 hours as the dark will help keep the fish calm.
Final Notes: This is hard to do in a death cup, so you have two options when acclimatizing Betta's. First (and my preferred option), is to pour the death cup along with the Betta into a clean fish bag. This way you can pour more than 1/4 cup of water in with the fish. Second way (works in a pinch), is just put little amounts of water into the cup (you may only be able to do it 1 or 2 times before the cup is full). Hope this helps

Remember to Quarantine.
I will not be held responsible for anything that happens if you try my methods. Everything I post is just my opinion, and I'm not pretending to know everything. That's why it's called "The Cory Way"

I'm just trying to help people out. Cheers
