How-To Guide: DIY Slate Background - The Cory Way

Well, for my Egyptian Mouthbrooder tank I wanted to make a DIY background. I thought of the Styrofoam background cured in cement, but I didn't quite like the look enough, and I didn't want to deal with the p.H. difference due to the cement. Then I liked the Lava Rock background for a while, then I finally decided on the Slate Background. I looked over the plans, but I didn't really follow them. Here's what you need:

Sheet of Acrylic or PVC
1 Tube G.E. Silcone I (Window and Door) or your silicone of choice
Few tiles of slate

Step 1:
Get your background sheet cut to size. NOTE: This is a pain without the right tools (i.e. a hacksaw cutting acrylic is not the right tool ). Assemble the rocks how you want them (shown in picture below)

Step 2:
Glue your pieces of slate onto the background. When doing this, when not in use, put the nozzle of the silicone on top of a piece of newspaper or something similar so you don't drip like I did Leave for at least 48 hours.

Step 3: Put into tank and admire

Some things to note before starting this:
- When gluing on slate, make sure that the board is in a place that won't be disrupted, if you move it, your rocks may pop off
- Get more slate then you think, as you can see, I have gaps that I will be filling in when I can get more slate
- I do have a garbage bag on the back of the tank so you can't see my red walls. You can use anything as it is on the outside of the tank.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures, my room lighting is not very good, and I was having some camera problems. Any questions, feel free to ask

I will not be held responsible for anything that happens if you try my methods. Everything I post is just my opinion, and I'm not pretending to know everything. That's why it's called "The Cory Way" I'm just trying to help people out. Cheers

Thanks It should look a lot better if I can get more slate and fill in the blank spots, but I don't think the garbage bag filling in the space looks too horrible
