Koi...In a 5.5gal

I'm going to be fish-sitting my brother's roommate's fish over the holidays, and I have a couple questions. First of all, it's a koi in a 5.5 gallon tank. Yes, a 5.5 gallon... But he's had it for a couple months now, and it seems to be doing alright. I don't know any of the water parameters, but he says he has a large canister filter for it. My question is about the water changes... The water at their college has chlorine in it, but the water at my house doesn't (it's well water). I'm sure he has conditioner, but I'm just worried about doing a water change where the water's from a different water source. Should I acclimate it to my water when I do a water change, or would it be alright without it?

Koi are hardy, and will survive for months or even a couple of years in absolutely terrible conditions. However, given that they can live for decades or even centuries, a few months or years is a drop in the bucket.
A "large canister filter" would turn a 5.5g into a whirlpool, so I somehow doubt tha tclaim.

Now, on to your question.
As I understand it, you'll be bringing this fish to your house over the holidays. Is this correct?
Can you have a pond ready, along with a convincing story of the koi's leap to its own death (they are jumpers)? No... Didn't think so. But I had to try.
Have him do a partial water change right before you pick it up. Then, the first day, change out a tiny bit every few hours. This will acclimate it to your water supply.

Yes, it'll be at my place for a while.
Haha!! We DO have a pond outside, but it's filled with game fish. He'd be eaten the first day, though.
Alright! Thanks! That helps a lot!!

Too bad you couldn't throw a divider into the pond

Nope, just goldfish. And not even full grown goldfish - my sister has some that are twice the size of mine. And Koi grow even bigger.

He would probably think twice, then!! He had 4 green spotted puffers in the same tank before the koi, but then he read that they get 6 inches long and they hate each other...
Man, those are beautiful fish, Gremlin!!

Well, I finally got it. Turns out he has a canister filter for a 50 gallon tank for it. The thing is taller than the tank itself! It seems to be working well with the fish, though. The koi's doing great and he's really active! Hopefully I can post some pictures soon.

wow, that's a lot of filtration for such a small tank. The fish might have more space in the filter bucket
