closest looking fish to a koi?

i want koi really badly, but i don't have a large enough place to keep them indoors or out, so what looks like a koi... but isn't as big as a koi, ive seen okay looking comets, is this the only "similar" smaller looking "koi"

Well I would think just about any goldfish would resemble a koi, but if your looking for something that more resembles it a comet comes to mind. Shubunkins are pretty similar to koi as well.

Here's a link to different kinds of goldfish so you can see for yourself: http://www.desktopgoldfish.com/goldfish-types.php

EDIT: I'd also check out the koi swordtail. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...22&pcatid=2822

Shubunkins are also similar to Koi but I believe they even get a bit large....possibly 14". I had them for years but never got that big and yet my Koi are all over 24" and still growing.
There is a variety of Shubunkin that is black and blue colored....beautiful fish...expensive for a goldy type....they never got over 6"....but spawn, spawn, spawn....gave them away cause i needed room for the Koi to grow.

Your welcome
Personally I would go for the koi swordtail as it doesn't need as much room.
As Ted said shubunkins get pretty big and would probably require a huge tank.

Shubunkins get just as big as the common and comet goldfish. If it is just the coloring that you are looking for, there are a couple of fish that have a similar look.

Mollies - Harlequin Sailfin, Marble Lyretail, (and for the silver coloring) Platinum Lyretail, there are also all black and all orange Mollies.

Platies - There are several color variations of the Platies as well. Personally, I like the Blue Platy.

Swordtails - Mostly orange, there are other colors available also. The Koi Swordtail is a patterned orange and white and the Sanshoku Swordtail has the speckled shubunkin type coloring.
