| Koi, koi, koi This is purely out of curiosity, what is the stocking rule for koi, is it the same as goldfish? What would be the minimum pond size. Also, do they get bigger than goldies? Thanks. Last edited by MeGustaUnaPez926; February 19th, 2009 at 11:17 PM.
Reason: spelled koi wrong, haha |

| koi definitely get bigger than goldies, i think that they generally get around 36 inches or so, and midnightwolf is right, 1000 gallons is the minimum but i'd go bigger than that personally.
here's a stocking guide http://www.koiandponds.com/fishstockingtable.htm |

| lol, yeah they definitely get huge! i love them but it's going to be a very very long time (if ever) that i'll be able to keep them . goldies first i suppose, but i must say that i'm really particular to the shubunkin goldfish, they're amazing! |

| Butterfly koi tend to be a bit smaller (they tend to max out between one and two feet, I believe), but they still need a huge space. I will have a 200g tank that will likely have a single butterfly koi in it until I can put together a pond (which may be years). |

| There are a lot of variables that go into keeping KOI. 1st and foremost is filtration. I would say 1000 gallons is the smallest a pond should have but the number of KOI is dependent on filtration within reason of course. Its all about getting rid of solids and ammonia. If you have 1000 G pond and a 1000 gal pump and filter then yeah only one KOI would be acceptable as they are heavy waste producers........However if you have a 1000 g pond and a 3000 gal pump and filter then you could keep a few more. Water quality is the key. The other thing that I've found helpful are plants. Shortly after I added plants to my pond the water quality really stabilized and they help with keeping the quality good for longer periods of time. Even though the more space your KOI have the better, as long as the water is good they stay healthy............Just my 2 cents.

| I have a 2,100 gal above ground Koi pond. It is made out of 4x6 treated lumber...log cabin look. I have 11 Koi in it...24" inches +. and home-made Biofilter. figure the same number as in Gold fish. I use a hefty aireation system which increases the number of Koi and change 20% water at least once a month during the summer....and waterfall runs 24/7. They spawn like Golfish too but on a grand scale....eggs everywhere....even splashed outside the pool!! Sames basic rules as an aquarium...except feeding...never after water temp drops below 50 and never in the spring until above 50 and you are sure the biofilter is working. |

| Wait a minute - I thought I was the gremlin around here!
You don't feed them when the temp is below 50 because they sort of semi-hibernate. It can throw off their systems if you feed them when they are trying to slow down for the winter. Koi are more sensitive to water quality than goldfish are. Koi will eat on any plant in their area. The ideal koi pond would be a two (or more) level pond with the plants in a smaller upper pond that acts as a biological filter and the koi in a much larger lower pond with fewer plants for them to destroy. You can actually buy netting to put around your plants to keep the koi from destroying them. I like the colors of the shubunkin goldfish. My sister has some gorgeous shubunkins in her pond. I like my regular plain old comet/common goldies. |
