I would run after them and yell "No Leave it alone!!!!" they particullarly hated Lizards for some reason. I really liked the Lizards there ..they are big! They thought I was nuts because I would not let them kill the animals.

It could just be that lizards and snakes have the potential to be poisonous, and if you leave a poisonous animal alive, it may end up biting a child who thinks it's pretty. In one way, they're being very responsible. In another, they're not. In my (and your) opinion, teaching children is a more responsible answer.
