That is a type of cichlid. Unfortunately, I have no experience with them whatsoever. Hope that Angela or some other cichlid guru shows up and IDs it!

I have narrowed it down between these 2. Placidochromis milomo or Nimbochromis livingstonii

I am pretty sure that its Nimbochromis livingstonii. A juvi, possibly a female.

Thats what I was afraid of. He's going back today. He joined some Malawi's, a JD and a T.Meeki and really upset the balance of the tank. Too aggressive he was actually doing what they do in the wild too burrowing into the substrate in order to suprise and catch fish! I got him from a mixed African tank and consulted with the owner of the store. He told me I shouldn't have a problem and sold him to me as the other species I mentioned.

Right now the tank is stocked with small fish which will be going into a 70 gallon this week. We've trying a mix with central americans and africans. None of the cichlids are 3 inches yet.

1 Jack Dempsey(male)
1 Firemouth (female)
2 Kribenis (male/female)
1 Socolofi (male)
2 Yellow Tail Acei
2 M. estherae
2 Boseman's Raimbowfish
5 Tiger Barbs (green and yellow)
1 Pearl Gourami
2 Clown Loaches
1 Otto
1 Dwarf Frog

Thank you Angela for helping me with that . I was going to take him back anyway no matter what his species because of his aggressivness but it's nice to know exactly for those times when your checking out a mixed tank at the LFS!

no problem. the malawis and cichlids from anywhere else are not compatable. they will have major problems when they are adults. also where the american cichlids are used to a low pH soft water the malawis need a high ph hard water. they cannot thrive together.
