My Swamp Tank... 1 month later!

OK guys, I have to admit, I didn't realize just how dramatic the difference a month (or more like 3 weeks) has made. There's been a couple small changes I made, most notably the Riccia rocks across the front weren't doing well and are now gone, which the Java moss quickly took over. But most the tank has done on it's own.
The Banana plants bounced around a bit before settling down and rooting. 4 days later 2 of them had shot a leaf to the surface. The sword plant in the middle, which I'm now pretty sure is a ruffled sword (Echinodorus martii) has doubled in size and shot 2 beautiful runners to the surface. Also across the surface the Val's have about doubled in length. The Brazillian pennywart has more than doubled in size, and I'm getting ready to prune it back. And I've already had to prune the Hygrophiles back.
And then last, and definitly what I'm most proud of, is that monster twisted beauty on the left. That is a Crinum calamistratum, and I moved it forward and out of the driftwood shadow (about 2 inches) maybe 2 weeks ago. You can see the difference yourselves. It's just a HAPPY plant! hehehe
So anyway, like the saying goes: a picture is worth a thousand words, so I'll let these 2 pictures do all the talking.

It's hard to tell from the front, but there's about 2 inches of space between the hygrophile stalks and the back glass. There's also room behind the driftwood to get at everything. Surprising as it might sound, there's not that many plants in this tank. The hygrophile all across the back, for example, is only 9 individual plants; one clump from the pet store spread out with about 4 inches between each. This was a HUGE mistake I made on the Angelfish Garden; I planted stuff too close and didn't plan ahead for growth, and plants in the back were becoming choked and started to rot. Truth is, I've been very careful to use as FEW plants as possible while maintaining the illusion of it being a crowded tank. I think this is possibly the most important thing I've learned doing these tanks.

Jim that is beautiful. I wish I had the funds to setup up nice lighting and co2 and try to make something look that good.

The months time has really enhanced the look. Its amazing what time can do to a planted tank. What is the stringy plant on the left?

Honestly, it took a while to build up all the lights and the CO2. I kept experimenting with different light arrangements, trying to stack as much light as I could over this tank, which is a bowfront and a little weird shaped. I finally think I've hit the right wattage. The CO2 regulator wasn't so much the $$$, as just finding one around here.
The stringy plant on the left is a Crinum calamistratun. It's sort of the spotlight specimen plant of the tank, and the one I love most. I absolutly love the look of it, it adds a real weirdness to the tank. It cost almost $30.00, but I didn't care, when I saw it I knew I had to have it. And I bought it at Fish-World in Tampa, who actually CARE for their plants and tanks (also the place I've found the best, weirdest driftwood pieces). The owner told me it had been in the tank it was in for almost 9 months already. And luckily I had no transplant issues.

Hey, a neighbor! I'm actually about an hour north of Tampa, in Port Richey. Cool, I'm going to send Fish World out a huge plug now, and you can testify that what I say is true.... lol.
I stumbled on Fish World when I was doing a delivery down that way, and decided to scout it out on the way back (when I had a little time to kill). WhenI first walked in, I almost walked right out again... all the tanks were green. But it took only a second to see the green wasn't the water, it was because almost EVERY tank had a big beautiful emerald blob of Java moss growing in it!! So I walk in and before I get to the tanks I round a corner and see 2 things at once. On the left is a shelf full of the most twisted, gnarly, horrificly beautifyl driftwood I've ever seen, and on the floor in front of it is a big fat fuzzy cat. At this point I'm now in love with this store. And again, the driftwood was unreal. I could build a tank around at least 20 different pieces if I had the time and $$$. The piece I have on the right I found near where I live quite by accident; I saw it and immediately bought it. The piece on the left I found at Fish World. I was hoping to find sometihing to work with, and I swear this one was a perfect match. It was almost as if the slate bases connected.
But the first piece I bought there was this one:

So by now the geek that works there came over. I don't mean geek in a bad way, this kid would proudly rule our "Are you a geek?" poll here...lol. And within minutes I liked him, because he KNOWS fish! Finally, someone that not only works at a LFS, but actually loves and cares for them like he owns them... which, BTW, from what I understand, some of the angels and discus are his personal breeders babies he brings in now and then. And to make it worse, the Discus I saw him bring in once were TANGERINE!!! Like 25, all just about an inch across, and really beautiful. Anyway, he comes over and I start talking to him about what I'm looking for. I told him all the wood was beautiful, but flat and long for a normal tank, and I needed tall and skinny for a column tank. So he asks the owner, who thinks about it a minute, and says "Discus tank" And grabs my arm and takes me to the back of the store where this was sitting in a big discus tank. I asked how long it had been in there, and she said 6 weeks or so. In a nice sparkly clean Discus tank?? Immediately I knew I wanted it and asked if she would sell it and she said of course, and proceded to find some heavy plastic bags and a box to put it in. And then carefully removed it so as not to screw up the tank too bad as well as damage the wood. This lady was good. I think she charged me $50.00, which was fine for not only a beautiful piece, but an already submerged SEASONED piece.
So anyway, I think you all get the idea by now. I haven't taken a picture of my tanks there yet. I really want to, but works been too crazy and I haven't been down that way. I will soon. In the swamp tank not only the Driftwood, but also the Java moss, Riccia, Bananas, Vals, and most notibly the Crinum calamistratun came from there. In fact, I GUARENTEE if someone showed the owner lady a picture of this tank she would immediately recognize that plant and then remember who i was. And the Java and Riccia I bought there is not only thriving, but I now have an unlimited supply, and may end up giving some away down the road...lol.
So anyway, if you live in central Florida or along the Gulf Coast and are in the Tampa-St. Pete area I would HIGHLY recommend a side trip to this store. It's a little brick shop on the corner of Waters and Edison in Downtown Tampa. And the sign said open 7 days a week, except during football season... how can you NOT love that??

I am using a RedSea CO2 pro system. It 's a regulator kit that attaches to 20 or 24oz. paintball canasters.
