JD size

Hi, I am new to JD's. I have a male JD about 4" long and just bought 4 JD's about 2" long 2 Salvani 2" long. Do you think the small fish will be alright or should I try and seperate them? They have been in the tank for an hour with no problems. For right now they are in a 30 gallon tank. They are going to be moved into a 55 gallon tank in the next month or so. Thank you for your time. Lee

welcome to fishlore!!!

great fish you have!!as juvies, they should be ok as they are fast...

but jd males can get to 8-9 inches...and fems about 6-7...i wouldnt put more than 2 in a 55g and if you have a pair, they wont tolerate ANY other fish with them...

salvani's are aggressive as the jd's...if they are a pair, it will be an all out war in a 55g tank with the jd's...

Thank you for your help. Right now I put a divider in there. I will remove it later when I can watch them for awhile. Only 2 fish in a 55? Maybe I should re-think what I want. The 30 gallon I just got with the JD in the package. Went all over looking for another one ended up buying 4 because of the size different. I have been out of the hobby for 4 years, and I am just getting started up again. Lee

if you go with the jd's, yes only 2 will be able to go there... they have a good size bioload....but you can have other small fish with them like maybe 2 jd's and a pair of angels in the 55g? that way you have some bottom/middle dwellers(jd's) and some middle/top dwellers(angels)...but 6 jd's in a 55 would be way too much .. or you could go 2 jd's and your 2 salvani's in the 55g...only caution is if either of them are a pair, they primarily hang out in the same area of the tank and might have a war with eachother....
its a crazy hobby for sure and im glad you are back in there!! its a ton of fun and so much relaxation would love to see some pics of your tank sometime if you care to share!

Thanks. I missed being in it. At one time I had 20 aquariums, tried raising Angel fish with a friend. It did not work out. And, with 6 kids and when my youngest daughter dumped shampoo in my Cichlid tank because she thought they were dirty, it was time to take a break. Soon as I get the 55 set up for them I will post pictures. I have some research to do. I would like to put live plants in if possible when I do the set up. Thanks again Lee
