Floating Horizontally????

My Jack Dempsey hides in his new Terra Cotta Pot but he is hiding (floating) horizontally on the top, inside, of it. He seems healthy and when realizes he is discovered he swims out. Is this normal? He also comes to the top of the tank and floats next to the glass at about a 45 degree angle. He is still very shy and does not get excited at feeding time, will not eat until I am out of room and lights are off.

pH-7
Nitrates-0
Nitrites-0
Temp-78
ammonia-0
Tankmates-none
Setup- tank (4 months) him(1.5 weeks)

hmm unless its night time, a JD floating horizontally on the inside of a pot, doesnt sound good to me....mine explores the entire tank or sits near his gal pal but never horizontally....what test kit are you using and do you know why you have no nitrates?

Ok, sorry for so long without reply, I was mistaken about the nitrates. Nitrates are about 15. The tank had already been cycled from a previous fish, and a colonized filter but has fresh water before this fish was added, this is why there were no measureable nitrates.

I am using API '5 in 1' test strips (PH, Nitrates, Nitrites, General Hardness, Carbonate Hardness) and API Ammonia Test Strips.

He is not doing the swimming horizontaly in the pot often; I have only seen him doing it once (he is not floating though, he is swimming in place horizontally trying to hide). He is doing the 45 degree swimming in place near top though. He also likes to lay upright on bottom when he is scared or hiding (at moment, whenever I am in the room near tank). Still not excited about feeding time but does eventually eat (will now eat when I am in room but not standing by tank).

sounds like something is up with the cycle test strips arent very reliable and most often give false readings...see if you can find an api liquid test kit for at least the ammonia/nitrites (you want to be right on target and very accurate with those 2 as they can kill a fish fast) hanging out at the top and horizontally swimming, is a sign something is up with his water conditions ...can you find some prime ? that will help in the meantime with some daily partial water changes ...good luck!

I used a water kit and all of the water readings are correct. The cycle is good it is just that we replaced the water in the tank after getting the new fish. The filter is still colonized. He is no longer swimming horizontally. He only did when he was very scared from beginning water changes.

I'm glad he's feeling better. What an odd reaction to water changes....

Ok, he did it again but he only does it when I am in the process of doing a water change. The Terra Cotta pot has a very wide lip diameter. He is floating/swimming horizontally in order to be completely hiden. Do you think this is ok/normal?

All water perameters are good.
