Update on Rattliff Jack Dempsey

Thank you all so much for your help! He is already beginning to come out and wonder about. Although, I am beginning to wonder if he is in fact a pure blod Jack Dempsey, given the large bridge on his nose. Never-the-less, I love him. He is perfect. Unfortunatly he is older and without knowing his age he may already be on his final days (hope not). Bellow are some new video of him where you can see his colors clearer. Thank you all again.

He's gorgeous! I'm still learning how to sex JD's, but I think he may be a female. Hopefully Shawnie will see this and can tell us for sure.

I love that "backing up" thing they do. It seems to be a signature move for all my JD's. It's so cute.

Def. a male. Can tell by dorsal fin. It sweeps to a point, females have more of a rounded dorsal end.

Females also have spangles on the gill plate no?

Just a note though, the dorsal fins is not always correct, same for the gill plate.

my females dorsal isnt rounded a bit(will gladly share pics for you to see her if you like ) ....but she is less colorful and looks like your jd...but your jd has been through allot and probably hasnt fully colored up yet.....the males will have much less color on their gill plate but have a fabulous color on their body..where the ladies will have a dull body color and a very colorful gill plate....given a few more days of your jd relaxing, would be best..if I had to guess now tho, id guess male as well...the bump looks like an injury maybe? but that IS a full blooded jd IMO

It may be different for the EBJDs becuase all the reading I did when researching the EBJD before getting one said the females fins were rounded while the males swooped to a point. I may very well be misinformed though.

that use to be the way years ago that jd's were sexed...ive heard it also for a long time...but its not a reliable way and ive had more luck with the gill plate way...although ive only had 2 pure ebjd's, they also had the same finnage .swilkins has some amazing ebjds and im sure she can answer more on that .....but what does ebjd have to do with yours? just curious is all

EDIT: those pics werent up when I commented ...great looking ebjd's!! but ive seen fems with the same finnage as the male pic and even seen her spawn ...so again, I dont think the finnage is the way to go but thats just my opinion

Before getting my Jack Dempsey I had a juvie EBJD. Unfortunatly, due to LPS breeding EBJD with EBJD, he did not last but a few months. The logical fish to get next was a Jack Dempsey; considering care was so similar. Found my boy at the local fish specialty store. Did not want to take risk of losing another EBJD.

i am curious, why would a EBJD and EBJD produce weak offspring? is it in their genes or something?

Hello Ratcliff. Your tank and fish are beautiful! Thanks for sharing the videos and the photos with us.
Best of luck. I believe the fish has found a good fish Dad!
