JD vs Tiger Oscar

Good day Experts,

Please could you help WRT below?

I have got a Jack Dempsey (Approx 4inch) & Tiger Oscar (T O) (Approx 4inch).
They are new tankmates (T O newest member) My JD constantly chases the T O arround in the tank, however no biting. The JD was a nervous nelly until I introduced T O - now it seems that my JD turned psycho. My tank has got a few hiding places (Caves, plants, ETC.)

Does this mean I have to get rid of one or is there another remedy for them to become best friends.

Many thanks in advance &

Best rgds

LL

Welcome to Fishlore!
If there is no actual violence between them yet - I'd see if they calm down first before getting rid of either. How long ago did you introduce the Oscar?
Beautiful dog in your avatar by the way.

Hi Amanda,

They have been 2gether since last week friday morning, Tempo (Oscar) looks really stressed, but no phisical damage spotted as yet, only JD is thinkin he is the main man. If things gets a bit of hand i will most definatly give the oscar away if need be.

Many thank for your much appreciated reply.

Hi Amanda,

This morning there is definate signs of physical marks on my T O, however did remove the JD & placed him in another tank with 3 x Tilapia and a 20cm Red Oscar. Strangely the bigger guys does nothing to their new roomie.

The physical evidence on T O some scales is missing, but I think the small guy will be OK. I think I will reintroduce my JD back with the T O after three months or so. Because my understanding is that Oscars grow far quicker than JD's (I this OK??)

What size tank did you move the JD to? If there's room, I'd leave it in that tank for now. When the Oscar gets larger, then re-introduce the JD.

Hi Amanda,

The tank is 'bout 80 gallons. But what I dont understand is that the JD is a bit bigger than the tilapia's but he does not bother them, what I do know is that the JD is male & the Big Oscar is Female as well as the tilapia's also female. T O is however a male, can this be a reason that JD wants to let T O know that this is his territory?

How are you so sure about the sex of your Oscars?
If it is indeed male, it could be a territory thing.

It was my purpose to get a male and @ our local petstore the "EXPERT" assured me that the T O is definately a male. Maybe he is/was wrong. Honestly I really do not know my Oscar's sex! I have sat reading through blogs, etc. for some kind of answer but one thing says this & yet another counters that statement so - *WHAT TO DO*

Well, it is almost impossible to sex an Oscar unless they begin breeding. There is no external difference between a male & female Oscar.
