Almost There

Hello all,

I am the proud owner of a pair of about to mate Jack Dempseys. At least I

think they are getting ready. The two have been swimming around together,

following each other and dancing for a few weeks. They also moved in

together, and have been busy digging out the gravel inside their cave pretty

much to the glass bottom. And finally they killed off a couple of smaller fish I

had in there with them, I know this isn't uncommon but they left the other

fish alone before pairing off.

The female has been getting fatter, I assume with eggs, and the male's color

has gotten and stayed very dark. She has been staying in the cave more

and more while he is out doing his "patrols" around the tank. From what I

have read online, it sounds to me like they are getting ready. The only thing

I haven't seen is lip locking between them. I do see them dancing every so

often almost daily.

So I just wanted double check and ask everyone if it sounds like they

are getting ready? If they are is there anything I can do to make it more

comfortable for them? I have plenty of flat pieces of slate, do you think I

should I put one in the bottom of their cave or just leave them alone? I

have been letting them do their own thing so far and haven't really moved

anything around in the tank since they dug out the cave. Thanks in advance

for any help.

sounds like they are pre spawnning mode..do you have pics of them? id love to see them..and you dont really have to do anything but leave them be..maybe do a water change and add some extra fresh/frozen bloodworms to their diet....

Thanks for the advice. They won't have any problem with more blood worms, they are their favorite. Here are a couple of pics, the first one is of the female, Jack Bower Dempsey. If you look close you can see her stomach is getting fatter. The second is of the male Nick Diaz. The third is them having a bloodworm treat after reading your post.

Sounds like a plan, I will leave them alone and not change anything around. I think I am just being impatient and want everything to happen right away. Thanks for the comments on my Jacks. Hopefully next post will be when they finally lay the eggs.
