Young EBJD - Finicky Eater

My new little guy just loves blood worms. Prob is that is all he'll eat. I've tried shrimp pellets, flakes, freeze dried brine, and Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets. He ignores all except the blood worms.

He's only been in the tank a 3 days and he's about 3 inches. He looks a bit slender but is very active and social.

Should I hold back the blood worms for awhile and hope he gets hungry enough to try other foods? Any ideas for other foods to try?

Such a beautiful fish! I wish I could get one, or two! Lol. He will eat anything eventually. He probably just needs some time to adjust like Shawnie said.

Thanks - I thought he was very cool looking and he's got a great personality, too. He get's along great with his not so finicky 3.5 inch Tiger Oscar friend. They're in a 75G as of now. I got him for $40.00. $20.00 cheaper than a few weeks ago I was told.

After speaking with the LFS where I got him it sounds like they only fed him blood worms - which makes sense considering his appetite for them.

I was going to hold off on the blood worms for a few days hoping he would be hungry enough to try other morsels, but after 36 hours of not touching anything I finally gave in to his wants.

I figure I'd throw in a poor quality pic of him with his bud.

I could ship you a pair for around half that price. I don't have them myself, but have been looking at them at several pet shops in my area since I am thinking about getting a breeding pair.

How's the EBJD doing? I'm looking for a pair atm. You have somewhere that sells them cheaper?

Update

My EBJD seems to be eating the smallest amount of frozen krill and frozen spirulina brine. He'll eat a bit of the smallest pieces and spit the larger - if you want to call any brine shrimp 'large'. He still ignores all flake and pellet.

I have not given him any blood worm for 5 days now.

I'm seeing that many 'spitting' issues can be traced to parasites, so I'm still contemplating Metronidazole/Praziquantel treatment to be sure he has no issues in thate area. I'll give him at least another few days before going into any meds. He is a bit thin but acts normally otherwise.

$3 for a 2"-3" JD is average around here. I have not seen any EBJD at the shops I frequent in about 3 weeks, but they are no more expensive than the common JD when they have them. The fact that they are selling for sooooooo much more online is why I am thinking about getting into breeding them. I will happily sell them for far less than most people are selling them for.

It has been 11 days since you started this thread. From the start you said that he looked a bit thin. Has he lost a considerable ammount of size since you got him? The main reason that I ask is that he is evidentaly eating enough to stay alive. Maybe he is picking a lot more food out of the plants and gravel than what you know about when you are not watching.

Marksuttonjr,

I fed him blood worms once since starting the thread.

I do see him going about the gravel and looking for food. He does take up something once in awhile when I'm watching, but he usually spits it. I am pretty sure he does eat a microscopic amount.

As for size, he seems to be about the same size as when I got him 3 weeks ago, but is hard to tell since the juvi Oscar is growning so fast. He does not look unhealthy and still is acting normal.

I wouldn't worry about him too much, if he has not lost any size. Espicialy since he acts normal.
