I think the JD'S were off the list a few years ago and have never heard of the silvers or kissers being on there...

beth sometimes irresponsible pet owners let these fish go in the maine (each state has a list for this reason) lakes and streams and they take control of the natural species sometimes...

Wait.... u mean people that say-don't want their fish anylonger (for whatever reason) dump them in a river? And these dumped fish take over the natural species?
Well, yeah, that's exactly what you wrote. I guess it makes the fish owner feel better that they aren't flushing the fish. We've got some strange people among us........

Maine's Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has a list of unrestricted fish that can be imported at will, with anything not on the list requiring a permit. The list can be found here.

The page specifically says "Deleted this year: Jack Dempsy Cichlid (Cichlisoma octopasciatum) because it is a leading invasive pest."

Silvar dollars (Metynnis hypsauchen) are on the safe list, as are kissing gouramis (Helostoma temminckii).

Note that this page says it was last updated on 5/12/2004... if more recent updates have been made, they have not updated their website.

ROFL. Bringing back memories Shawnie, I also remember when NY was having a Snakehead problem. I also remember that I knew the person who dumped one in the river system.

This is no different than dumping a cup of bleach in our fish tanks. Morons.

haha yes i have bad spelling and thank you for posting the list of fish up cuz now i know that j.d's are now allowed in maine again. silver dollors and kissing fish i duno y they would be on the list. from what my LFS said is the inspector came in to his shop saw a silver dollor and thought it was part of the perana family so they booted them from maine. i guess the inspector can barly speak english along with that.
