Impending Spawn

Well it's been awhile since my last successful spawn with my male EBJD and his partner. That was my doing. I've had them with many other cichlids and decided to give them their own tank again. They are in a 40 gallon breeder with pool sand substrate, temperature @ 78, sponge filter and a HOB filter.

You can see the female is nice and fat with eggs. I've been feeding multiple times a day (when possible) and doing 25% water changes every two days. I should start to see mounds of sand and some pot cleaning very shortly.

Their last spawn was about a month ago but as she was laying the eggs it was snack time for everyone else. I have about 12 blue gene JD's that are from a Sept. 2008 spawn. I culled them down to this amount leaving me with the largest and best body shape and color.

So now onto round two.
I'll keep this thread updated as the spawn progresses. Wish them luck. Rich

That's a good looking pair. What bloodline is the male (Hollywood, Rapps, Asian, etc.)?

Good Luck,
Mark

The blue is from Hollywood. He's from a July 07 spawn.

Some Progress

Well it's been almost two weeks since I anticipated some spawning action. The pair was in a 40 gallon with sand substrate and were getting nowhere. Tuesday I moved them into my 75 gallon which is 1/2 sand ( one side) and 1/2 gravel. This is a tank they were in before. The ceramic pot is on the gravel side. Seems they like gravel better then sand because last night a pit was dug and today the pot is full of eggs. Finally. I was losing faith. 3 days till wigglers as long as the big guy did his job. Time will tell.

How awesome..Congrads..It's crazy they were just waiting to get back in their old place..lol..Looks like they did a good job..you too.

Edit:
that must be a huge pot...it makes your JD look tiny..

Well she's about 5 1/2" and the opening to the pot is 8 1/2". They like their room in there and there is an escape hole I drilled out on the side. She has always laid eggs in a pot. I have flat slate and stone but she doesn't seem to like that. Thanks for the reply. Rich

Here's an old shot of the tank when I added the sand. I was trying to see what they preferred. I now know.

Congratulations. Is the female a Blue Gene or a normal?

She's a regular. I have bg's but they are not breeding size as of yet. Eggs are slowly disappearing. Wigglers are either really hidden or the eggs were not fertile. There are too many pits that I can't see in to.

Well as time did tell I had infertile eggs. Looks like my blue went missing in action. In the past when I've had an unsuccessful spawn the male will become aggressive towards the female. They are in normal colors and staying close to each other this time. I was looking forward to some fry but I guess it wasn't meant to be this time. I must have jinxed them starting this thread.

Thanks CHoffman. Since they have produced for me before I'm not too disappointed. I'll separate them for a short time and try again. Thought I had them figured out. I was close.
