are jack dempseys shy

the 2 jds i bought yesterday have gone into hiding, they completely disappeared about 30 minutes after i put them in their new home, is this normal? they have plenty of hiding spaces i dont want to disturb them but getting quite worried because theyve not eaten either. ive kept the light out to help them settle in.

how long did you acclimate them? they are probably just adjusting to your new tank, generally when i get a new fish i don't feed them the first night or morning that i have them to give them some time to settle in. if yours don't look ill (keep an eye out for fin rot, ICH, discoloration, etc) then they probably just need a little time to acclimate to their new surroundings if they don't start to per up in a few days or a week then there could be something else wrong with them, but for now i'd just keep an eye on them and see how they do.

you're welcome

yeah, after being acclimated to the water for two hours they probably aren't in shock because of that, i'd get some new readings for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate just in case but other than that your JDs should be fine.

My JDs are very shy and Ive had them for around eight months or so. They run and hide as soon as you come near the tank and will peek their heads out of hiding at you. Funny tho at feeding time they are not shy, but all other times they get very spooked if someone comes near the tank and they go into hiding.
I think this is part of their personality... and your little ones are very new and most likely very shy and scared of their new surroundings and of you. They will get to a point of recognizing familiar faces tho, but they are still very shy.

I would say JDs are very shy to begin with but as they grow so does there bravery, the one i used to have once even bit me while i was cleaning the glass, he was only 3" when he done it though- luckily
