i bought 2 juvie jack dempseys and have no idea what sex they are. they are currently about 2 and a half inch long. in a uk 55gl tank until they get a bit bigger then il upgrade to a bigger tank. the pics arnt great im afraid.

thanks shawnie, there my latest babies. been waiting weeks for my tank to finish its cycle and been panicking because each week my LFS has had fewer and fewer dempseys. now i need names lol

at roughly what size can they sexed? am i right in if i have 2 males chances are they will fight and have to be seperated.

no not always...depending on size of tank, and each fishies temperaments, they could be best of friends....and usually around 5 inches or so but others may be able to sex them prior

My guess, ONLY a guess would be a male and a female. The pics are hard to look at but the top pic looks as though the one in back may be a male and the other a female. I am just guessing by their gill plates......the one in back has less spots (male) and the one in front has spots going all the way down (female). Also another way is male's dorsal and anal fin go to a point and females are rounder. Hope that helps for when they get older so you can tell for sure.
