| Hi Platyben
Your JD is gorgeous! What great coloring. One of my guys will be a year old in april and I am still waiting for him to color up. He still looks the same as when I got him, just a bit bigger... hmmmmm..... |

| They get plenty of frozen Blood worms in the morning, then around 4:00 they get New Life Spectrum Cichlid pellets and the evening meal is frozen brine shrimp.
At 22 months(opps I meant 10 months sorry) old they should have colored up by now? Last edited by capekate; February 8th, 2009 at 06:36 AM.

| well.. the other idea is that its possible they are both females and will never color up like the males...
Anyway.... your guy is gorgeous! Best of luck with him Last edited by capekate; February 8th, 2009 at 06:49 AM.

I dont want to hijack your thread...
Here are two photos of each of them. They do look the same to me, except the split in one of the tail fins. Im getting ready to go to work in a half hour, but will check and see what you think of them if they are both females?
thanks |

ben..these are the most dramatically changed fish IMO from juvie to adulthood...totally amazing..great job!
EDIT: wow they are getting their speckles but slowly...not sure if fems keep that grayish color tho...they actually look like the convict/jd combo we were looking at the other day kate LOL |

| they are JDs prob females. One of them was a teeny thing when I got it last April. But I agree, they should have colored up more by now. They both have the speckles around the face and in better light and movement I see more blue speckles. They are around 5 inches long and Im not sure the JD/Convict hybrid gets that big? These two have a more elongated body shape than that of the rounder convict.
Ohh well... guess I just have to 'wait and see' what they turn out to be.. |

| I think the first pic is certainly a female, and maybe the second pic aswell, i find the easiest way to sex JDs is by the shape of their head, the females head is one round curve, whereas males tend to have a big mouth then a raise up to the rest of their head.
I dont think the convict/JD combo would get this big. Healthy looking fish |

I can tell by how close the eyes are to the edge. Maybe.. its a male? But funny how the female convict has been 'flirting with the first JD, almost seemed like it was trying to get it to spawn with it...
Thanks for your help! |

| Jack Dempsey Photos that link has alot of fem and males...fems do have color...and most of them have the dark base color and just less or more speckles...males have less specks of color on their gill plates and fems will have it covering the gill plates... |

Thanks for your help! | if it were trying to spawn it would be shaking at the other fish.
also kinda kissing it or gumming it.
they both look female to me. |
