| Looking into Jack Dempseys Hi I currently have a 45g tank, and I was wondering if I would be able to put 2 JD's in it, I would like to buy smaller ones so I can watch them grow (thats half the fun of owning fish in my opinion ) I realize that when they get bigger I'll have to buy a much bigger tank, I would just like some feedback from other JD owners |

| welcome to fishlore tstone!!
once the tank is cycled, id say two juvies would be fine in a 45 gal to start out ...they do grow fast tho..and are amazing fish ....do you know about the nitrogen cycle? if not , heres a link you will find useful and you will need to do this no matter which fish you keep...goodluck!! http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm |

| Hello! I've got an 8 inch male dempsey that was housed in a 20 gallon up until about a month in a half ago!! lol I got a 50 gallon for him now. His tankmates included a firemouth, pleco, silver dollar and 2 pictus catfish at one time. Lost one catfish a while back, jumped out somehow. then the pleco died about 3 months ago. They are truely an interesting fish. They say they are an aggressive fish, but mine is peaceful toward other tankmates. He was about 2 inches when I got him and grewup with the other fish. When I moved them over to the new tank like an idiot, too soon, I lost my catfish and firemouth and had to put the dollar back into the 20 gallon cause jack was darting around the tank like a maniac stunning him in the middle of the night!!! lol I've read that you eather have one dempsey or get 3 or more.....due to this is my turf!!! lol Or a already mated pair. If ya' get two make sure they are a male and female is my best bet of them getting along. they love to hide, so have a few hiding places. I have a piece of piping in my tank that he just loves to hide in!!! Some are known to dig....so if ya' got live plants then goodluck!!! Last edited by AlyeskaGirl; January 9th, 2009 at 06:15 PM.

| I think they are one of the most different fish from juvie to adulthood ive ever seen..im sure there are more, but the jd's DO NOT look anything like that as adults... |

| Ok, so I've been watching my JD's for quite some time and it seems as though one is getting much bigger then the other, as if one is growing and one isn't, the larger one is chasing the smaller one away whenever I come up to the tank, I think it might be nipping at the others fins, but I don't see any damage to the smaller fish.. can someone advise me in what I should do.. |

| I don't know what you aquascaping is like, but possibly adding more hiding places or driftwood to break up the tank into more possible territories for them to guard would help. Also, the sooner you can get the 75 or 80 the better. Of course, when you get the tank you will still need to get your tank cycled before you put them in there. |
