| Jack Daniel fish...oops I mean Jack Dempsey Can anyone give me their opinion.... the reason is, I have the ability of acquiring a 55 gallon fully loaded for a very reasonable price incl delivery but it comes with Jack Dempseys and I have no idea about these fish.. being a newbie I have no idea about many fish at all....... Im wondering if my aggressive Angel would be happy in the same tank as them. |

| why not have the cake and eat it too...
I mean come on, that 55 gall is probably $500+ EASY! when its new.
even if you don't want the jack dempsey's (i know nothing about these fish either..) maybe you can sell them back to the store?
a good deal is a good deal, if you have the money and are in the market, go for it, before it's too late. |

| Hi Angelika, I like that ability of yours! Good for you!
I wouldn't put a Jack Dempsey with an Angelfish, no matter how aggressive the Angel might be. I would be careful with an Oscar or even a Midas for tankmates of a Jack Dempsey. Any idea why the Jack Dempsey nickname? If you have more than one, you might need a bigger tank, these guys grow something like 12". If only one, you can get by with the 55gal, but be sure you have good-to-excelent filtration. Go for it!
PS: if your Aquarium info is correct... this would be your tank#2, so... wellcome to MTS, fasten your seat belt, and enjoy the ride!

| If you decide to keep the Jack Dempseys I can tell you that they are beautiful fish. You could keep a pair of them in a 55 gallon. I used to have one and I was sad to get rid of it. Hopefully one day I will get another one. If you were planning on moving your angelfish in there I would just take the Jack Dempseys to the LFS and I am sure that they would be happy to take them for you |

| Shawnie .... I really want an angel tank and they just wont get a long from what I am reading... infact I do think I have some convicts in there too, Im about to post a couple more pics in my other link http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/fr...to-1-post.html Im trying to identify what these fish are so I can figure out what I can keep and what I have to find another home for... that my angel can be happy and safe living with. The angel is my only reason for acquiring another tank... |

| Im going to leave my 3 hatchets in the 20 gallon with an additional 5, and they can hang in there with the neon tetras ...so they will be in there on their own..
then I want to move the angel and cuckoo catfish into the 55 gallon with whatever gets along with him..
Platys can go back into the 12 gallon... one of my glo fish vannished ... so the other glo can hang out with the platys ...
ahhhhhhhhhh you see I got me all organized
oh the hatchets are now holding their own its quite amusing, they are up there gobbling up dinner and feeding time, I have learnt to spread the food around so everyone is happy, fed and content |

That's 8" over the " per gal guide, in a 55gal it would be alright but a 20gal it would be a mistake! |

| yeah, that rule of thumb isn't that great, plus you have to account that some of them will probably die straight from the LFS. |

| For the time being it would be OK... my neons are only 1/2" and the hatchets are 1".. I know the numbers per gall are for full grown..... and at the moment I am working with the right now as I can already see another darn tank on the horizon and I will put that at work..... but so far all seems OK right now I am currently way overstocked in the 20 gal as I have 8 neons, 1 cuckoo catfish, 3 hatchets and 1 glo.... levels are all ok... everyone is more than happy, and hanging out.... and I do more than regular water changes per week... so while they are all small..... Im not worrying about the per gallon rule.... I have another tank on the horizon but this one will go to my studio so it will all balance out. |

| Angelika - I hate to say it but eight hatchets in a twenty gallon tank even when small is overstocked due to their need for swimming room. Personally I wouldn't add anymore fish until I had a bigger tank to take care of the fish you have now.

carol | Or, take care of current fish, save new fish for later. Hatchets don't last in small numbers - believe me - they drop like flies...
Here's a better arangement:
10gal:
3 Platys
20gal:
8 GloFish
4" left
55gal:
3 angels
Cuckoo syno
8 hatchets
around 15" left
Cool? |

| Ok Angelika.
I read through the "few questions rolled into 1 post" and I totally aggree that you have this unusal ability, which I find wonderful.
I have little to add, except that I will stay tuned into this thread to experience how you work this around.
It's comforting to hear it's your tank #3 in two months.

Your a little late kid, lol Jk
I was reading this post because i was considering a Jack Dempsey for my 45 gal, but i have 3 angels in there, which makes it too small and too dangerous for the angels...
Maybe a convict, and a blue ram, idk, i need to do research! |

| Jack dempseys are known to be aggresive but mine really isnt, i have a 5-6" jack dempsey in my 72G community with, 2 angels, 3 boseman rainbow, 3 clown loaches, 1 opaline gourami, 1 bolivian ram, 1 angel catfish.
The only thing hes attacked so far is my hand when i clean the tank lol |
