Help with JD

I just got a fish tank off craigslist and it was a nice 55 gal., stand and all. When I got home it broke. Well now I have a 8" JD and only a 10 gal tank. He was a abused fish and is missing parts of his dorsal fin. He seems to be OK so far but I am short on funds now and cant purchase another tank. How long can he survive in that small tank?a I hope I can find him a home or get a donation of a 55gal. to put him. He will need more space soon. Have any Ideas

Here is a Picture of JD

He has great color and seems like a mellow fish. He had 2 girls but they died. I hope the stress isn't too much for him. he has gone from a 100gal. tank to a 10gal. He is going to need a home quick. Or if anyone in the Vancouver, Washington area has a 55 gal. they could let go of.

Thanks

Sorry about your tank. Very nice Jack Dempsey. I would say she's a female with all that color on the lower gill. IMO. Obviously the small tank will have to do for now. I would keep up on the water changes (25% every 3 to 4 days) and give her a hiding spot to reduce that stress. 55's are a dime a dozen so it should not too hard to find another. Good luck.

I know with all of that color I would have said female too but he is a proven male and used to have 2 females with him. They were the egg layers. He seems to be okay this morning, still reall mellow and now I must find something for him to eat. I have 4 breeding mollies and 7 babies, 2 leleupi's and a yoyo loach. There is no food for him. I will be digging through the freezer to see if I have some shrimp.I will keep looking on craigslist for a tank Cheep. I needed the tank and got the tank and another fish.

Thanks

The plot thickens!!!!

Did you ever decide if the new JD is a female?

Sounds like you need to keep your eyes out for more tanks FAST!

JD

The JD is a girl as I now have her a male and a new home with a young man who has a larger tank for the pair. Her sure does like her he hasbeen nudging her gently from underneath and curving around her. I did a complete strip of the tank because I put some feeder goldfish in and the ones that were not eaten right away died within 2 min. So tank must start over and by Sunday afternoon I will be down to just the Oscar.

Excellent.

One thing about feeder goldfish is that they are kept in terrible conditions, and they might have actually just died from the shock of being moved into the cleaner water. On top of this, they have nearly no nutritional value, so they aren't very good to use as a sole source of food for your fish. Most would do better to be taught to eat things like worms or pre-deadified food, like bits of raw fish.
Still, not necessarily a bad idea to strip the tank and start over, but don't forget that the tank will be un-cycled unless you've kept the filter media wet. If you use the same filter media, and if it never dried out, your fish will probably be fine.
