| | Fish Lore Newbie | sick albino iridescent About two weeks ago I was lucky enough to come across a 10" albino iridescent. She is in a 90 gallon tank with 7 smaller ones all ranging from3-4 inches. About a week ago she came down with a bad case of ick. I treated and the ick went away. However now her fins looks rather inflamed- like you see the veins going through her fins. My local pet store gave me an anti-biotic and maracyn that treats pop eye, fin and tail rot and body fungus. (at least it says on the box. She isn't eating hardly at all and after 4 days of treatment doesnt look much better. This is by far the biggest albino iridescent I have come across and I don't want to lose her. Any suggestions on how I can help her BTW the other fish in the tank to this point show no signs of sickness and eat well, generally very healthy fish. Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated... Last edited by chessie614bob; January 7th, 2009 at 09:26 PM.

| | Fish Master | What are the water parameters? |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | My local aquarium store took a full water sample day before yesterday, and said everything was in normal range. They tested pH, nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia. I just tested the PH and it came back pretty much right on7.0. I have 2 whisper 3 filters running with just the filter sleeve in and no carbon as advised. Im going back to the aquarium store first thing in the morning with another sample to make sure nothing has changed. I also did a 20% water change as recommended twice in the last three days. | | Fish Master | Never trust your LFS. That is the number one thing to learn.
You need to get a liquid test kit & test your water.
8 Iridescent sharks seem to be overstokcing a 90 gal. tank. |

| | Fish Keeper | 1 Iridescant shark is overstocking a 90gal, they need HUGE tanks, like 300gals. They can grow up to 50inchs |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Im getting a full test kit in the morning AFTER they give me their results; to see if there is any discrepency. & of 7 the 8 are 4" the albino is 10". Do you think there are a little to many The little ones are all fine. The bigger one seems to be the only sick one. I'd like to do whatever I can to help her, it has taken me 10 years to get an albino this big and dont want to lose her. Last edited by chessie614bob; January 7th, 2009 at 09:53 PM.

|
| | Fish Master | The best thing to do would be to sell the little ones.
That tank is severely overstocked.
Unless you plan on doing 50% water changes very often, the ammonia levels & nitrite levels are going to be hard to keep in check. |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Yea, actually before I moved I had a 150 gal tank and had two sharks in that both were between 12 and 14 inches and absolutley beautifull. |

|
| | Fish Lore Newbie | I think I may take your advise amanda, and sell probably 5 of the seven little ones. I may keep one black and one albino. |

| | Fish Master | I think that's a great idea.
Maybe even you'd be able to upgrade to a 120 gal.? |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | I do have the room to expand, and have been thinking about it as I would like to grow them a bit larger than the usual 4 or so inches you get from the local aquarium store. Im going to sell off some of the smaller ones and see if I can get this albino better. If all goes well, it may be that time!!! |

| | Fish Master | My LFS had a few in a 75 gal. a few months back. They were fun to watch. They now have GIANT Indian Gouramis. Another giant fish that is fun to watch. |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Yes they are fun to watch. Most times in the evening I prefer to shut out the room lights and just sit and watch them. The are really cool to watch swim around. VERY relaxing and peacefull. Ill post the results of the water tests tomorrow. Im going to get the numbers from the LFS, THEN do my own testing as well and compare the results. As well as talk to them about buying off several of the small ones. I been dealing with the same guy for years so it should be no problem. |
