Back again with yet another hitchhiker. This time, a crab. I seen him last night hiding in a rock. He was picking on the rocks, and was in a place where I have two spaghetti worms. They were not out, so I do not know if he ate them. Also, yesterday morning I had found one of my astrea snails shells empty right under where I had seen the crab last night. So I am pretty sure he must have had something to do with it. I am not sure what type of crab he is. I took two pictures, then went to look online to try to id him. When I went back to the tank to divise a plan to get him out, he was gone.

Any ideas what type of crab he is! Maybe a gorilla? He is small and light colored, maybe biege or brown. He was also hairy. The rock that I am finding all of these things on is florida live rock. Also, I need to know what kind of trap to set up to get him out. I have another astrea snail and two hermit crabs, and I do not want them to get killed too!

Well I got him out. I took all of my rocks out because it appeared like he was killing my other snail. I found the rock he was in and submersed it in freshwater. I also found another giant whelk snail that I removed. I hope that these are the last of these two bad guys! Now I have to buy more snails! Poor little guys! I will post pictures of the two naughty hitchhikers later.

Hello Sugabeatz and Welcome to Fish Lore! Hopefully someone can ID them for you. I don't have salt experience myself. I'll be looking forward to your additional photos!
Ken

Since there were no responses between your two posts I have merged them to save some space. Thanks! Ken

I'm not sure what type of crab he is. That said, I've had emerald crabs and a sally lightfoot. The emeralds were never too much of a problem (other than catching them eating some polyps). That sally lightfoot was one evil crab!! Lost a number of snails, a sea star and a scooter blennie. Ok...the scooter may have died on his own and he just ate him. But the fact is I lost all of these guys in probably 2 or 3 weeks.

Basically I'm saying is to beware of any crabs in your tank.
