Most bizare thing i've ever found!

Okay so i normally try to identify stuff myself, and i've looked around to find what it is.
I cannot get a picture because it is too small, and my dad has stolen the good camera what might be able to get a picture.
So it sort of looks likel an aiptasia (sp?) crossed with a seethrough starfish. And i read somewhere if you think its aiptasia - poke it with something (its on the glass btw) So i got a stick and poked one of them, and it shot of the rock and swam away in the style of a jellyfish! I was so shocked! i have about 5 spread along the front of the glass....any help? I will try to get a picture when my dad brings the camera back!

Hi Charlie
I guess without a pic it's hard for our salty members to help ID something.

haha nope, i didn't dare touch it with my finger, but i did poke it with a stick, which was when it jumped off the glass completeley and swam away.. I was like WHOA! becuase i was sure it was aiptasia or something :P

Offtopic - i got stung by a wasp i trod on today =[

Never been to leeds - i'm a lot more southern

Dont worry about getting stung by Aiptasia. Try getting stung by Carpet Anemones.

Sometinmes it will stick to your fingers. FIngers are usually OK with me (may not for all) but I did carry few black spots when stung by Carpet anemone and Elegant coral on soft side of my arms for few yrs (like Junkies, LOl!).I
f anyone is keeping such and/or other toxic fish/invert and you are allergic to crustaceans, bee stung, either get rid of them or extra attention should be given when handling tank wit such. For your Safety, of course.

I hope everyone with LR is ware of s/w snail which can kill you in matter of seconds. Can remember the neither common nor scientific name but possible hitchhiker on LR, but unlikely due to curing process, I hope. At least have not come across one in about 20 yrs of handling them and I have not heard of any incident in US yet.

Maybe someone could look into it and post so all handling LR will be aware of it. Dont mean to scare anyone but more you know, it is safer and easier.

Haha I think the wasp died too, becuase i had to pull it out myself D:
I'm not allergic to insect bites, so that would mean i'm not allergic to anenomie stings too right?
My mum is though...but she doesn't have anything to do with the tank..so i doubt that she would get stung...unless it leapt out of the tank! ;P

I've never heard of the snail that can kill - sounds kinda strange...a snail what is deadly... I might try and check that out... if i have time to search about for it

EDIT!: I've just found out how to use the closeup mode on my dads camera - so i'll try and get a picture once the light comes on (don't want to upset the balance )

EDIT 2!: Right people, i have pictures - see links please

Hi Charlie, I did some searching on jellyfish and there are some results that decribe the little critters that you have. Sea squirts is one name that came up, which are part of a group called ascidians. I don't know if this is taking you down the right road, but most of the articles suggest they are from New Zealand or Indonesia, and are part of the "cryptic fauna of live rock" Many aquarium inhabitants like to eat them as well. That's all I found up till now of any real relevence. There is a sea squirt called a rosette, which I havent found any good pictures of yet, but your critters seem to resemble little flowers. The sea squirts are know to free float or attach to rocks.

Hhhrm it sort of looks like that. I don't know wether you'd know, but are those seaquirts moving when the picture is taken? or stuck on the glass. Because mind don't look like that when staying still.

And oops about the Fiji bit - there's my crappy geography skills again =[

I dont think sea squirts are that mobile. It looks like a jellyfish polyp (baby) which could easily has come in on a piece of stuff you bought. They develope like tiny anemone trees and then the polyps release and become a swimable creatures. That would also explain why you have several.

i had the same little critter in my tank!!! :\ ive had lots of sea squirts also non resemble this lil fella though infact they dont tend to move, when i discovered him i investigated it and suspected he was infact a sub species of aiptasia as some do swim, ive not seen it in over 6 months and i now have 2 aipstasia im monitoring in my tank where as i only had one before :\ although i cannot be certain of this. (there is a moto ive learnt tho its kindda cruel but in same cases i wished id listened to it its "if in doubt, take it out"

haha i haven't removed it yet, but i haven't seen then multiplying in a while. maybe they were just coming out of the rock slowly but they weren't actually multiplying, however i will be keeping a close eye to see what becomes of it.
