what is this brown thing?

this came on a piece of live rock, its been in my tank for about 3 to 4 months and it has not spread, it closes and opens quite a few times. i just want to know what it is and is it bad for my tank.

Looks like a button polyp...a type of coral, not harmful at all. They're relatively easy to care for...moderate light and current. I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually started spreading, by splitting in 2.

Button polyp. Like said, harmless but can easily take over the tank if not weeded back some (Once it starts splitting).
