what is this thing that came with my live rock

Hi

i found it when i was about to put the live rock in my tank. is this a clam? what do i feed it? and what does it do to the other fish and shrimp.

And I think Fishrule gets the kewpie doll. Check out "scallop" in wikipedia. They've got a few pictures, and the "live specimen" picture looks very similar.

Unlikely. Most shelled critters like that filter feed. If this is the tank that's been set up for 7 months, it will probably take care of itself. The big thing that critters like this need is a lot of stuff in the water column. Some even actually absorb nitrate, either because they are adapted to feed off of it, or they grow algae/bacteria colonies that they feed off of, and the colonies need nitrate to survive.

It's self sustainable - so long as you have an established tank.
