My LFS just got in a tank full of Hybrid Diamond Neon Tetra's. They are a little bigger that Neon's with similar coloring but shinier. They are supposed to be hardy too; not delicate as with natural Neon Tetras. Is anyone familiar with these hybrids? I can find no information about them. Thanks

One of our LFS has some neons that are bigger than what I'm used to seeing. He told me they were a new strain that is bred in Florida. I'm not sure that it is a hybrid though. He said they were more hardy than the wild caught neons.

Yes, I believe you found them.* I bought 5 earlier today.* The LFS said that since they were small, five would not upset my tanks chemistry anymore than 2-3 Pristella’s would.* I acclimated them over a 2 hour period, and then put them in planted areas for protection.* They were immediately chased.* Well actually the biggest one seems to have taken the brunt of the interest/aggression.* Perhaps he’s trying to protect the others, as the try to hide.* I darkened the room, and fed the White Skirts, hoping to calm things down.* I hope they all relax and play nice.* I assume this is normal behavior?

update: I checked back after dinner and both groups are schooling independantly.* The skirts "check" them out once in a while, but all seems well!

After all this while, I must say that while being a pretty fish, I am unimpressed with them. They hide out much of the time, even when I had eight of them. I don't leave the lights on much at all on this tank anymore. An hour in the a.m. and 3-4 in the evening. The neons rarely come out when the overhead light is on. Perhaps I'll try a translucent covering to tone down the brightness. I don't have any live plants to worry about.

Maybe if you added some live plants they would come out more. Both my schools of neons love the live plants. just a thought.

Well, this morning all the fish were schooling around. Each in their own group. the Neons were also "out and about!" So alls well that ends well!

Dahly, it's stressful for the tank lights to be constantly turned on and off. Fish need a 12-hour day-night cycle just like people do. The purpose of lights are to give the animals and plants a consistent day and night, as well as provide a sort of "background noise", if you know what I mean, for room lights that go on and off, not just for viewing reasons.
Are you sure the fish are hybrids, not just different strains? And if they are either one, won't they tend to be less hardy than the original? Not that it matters, I'm sure you'll do fine with your new fishies. They sound really cool. I've never seen that type before.

Now that I have live plants in the tank, the light do stay on.* All fish are doing great!* These guys are the shyist I have, but do school around much of the time.* They are very brightly colored and beautiful.

Good job with the fish! It's so exciting to get new ones. I'm hoping to get some more myself--some Glowlight Tetras and some more Otos, obviously after getting a bigger tank.
