| Being helpful, helping ppl out with problems with answers that are right on, IMO rep is not something you look for it comes naturally Last edited by tomchitown; April 30th, 2009 at 09:25 AM.

| As far as reputations points I would have to suggest that you don’t worry too much about this system. It seems to be the least used system on the forum which is unfortunate. It would be useful to know the reputation of member’s advice. There are many new members that are experienced keepers that have no reputation points giving excellent advice where there are other long term members that give questionable advice.
I would like to encourage members to use this feature more often but agree I too often over look the opportunity to give credit to members when credit is due. I’ve been trying to remember to use this feature more often when credit is due but feel it is an overlooked feature far too often.
Provide your best possible advice to fellow members and feel good about being able to help fellow keepers with your best possible advice.
Take heart in the fact that you have helped a fellow member and don’t feel rejected by the lack of recognition. IMO charity comes from within and not from recognition.
At the end of the day it is not the recognition I have received but the help I’ve been able to offer to others that makes me sleep well. |

In our "little" community, it seems to be pretty easy to tell who's giving good advice and who's not. Last edited by sirdarksol; April 30th, 2009 at 03:16 PM.

| Being thoughtful as to how you phrase your advice goes a long way also. Giving correct advice in a harsh, hurtful, or rude way makes people pay less attention to your advice even if it is correct.
To be truthful I very rarely look at the rep points anyone has but how they communicate.

| Rep Points Dont Really Matter Aslong As You Are Giving Good Advice.
I have been on this forum for ages now and i have only recieved 1 rep point so far and i am happy as long as people like my information and it helps them.

| I just like to try and help out if I can. Learn as much as I can. Even though I've been a fish keeper for years I learn something new every day. It's a wonderful site. |

| i'm with dozey on this one, i think that it could be a very useful tool but a lot of the new members don't really know about it, so most of the people awarding rep are those that have been around for a while anyways. i know i don't even think to give "rep" most of the time but i know that if i see a thread that i don't know the answer to but someone else does (pink for a puffer thread, angela for malawi cichlids, MM for betta breeding, etc) i guess i give "rep" in that way. i'm on here ALL the time and i think that, at least for me, it's reassuring to know that even though this person posting may not know the answer, that they're giving you a specific recommendation for someone that does who will be along soon to help. also, i think it's just as simple as that kind of acknowledgement that really matters. there are a lot of wonderful members here and they post to provide information, not for a post count or rep points or whatever else. |

| I think that some members may be looking at this issue from the wrong perspective.
I kind of said this before, as did another member, but I'll reiterate it:
Don't go looking for reputation. Don't try to be a moderator. If you have to try for either, it's likely never going to happen. I can't speak for all of the other mods, but I know that I never asked to be a mod. I just got a PM one day asking if I wanted to keep doing the same things I had been doing up until that point but have a "Moderator" tag under my name. I know that at least a few of the current mods have similar stories.
Likewise, in another forum I used to be a part of, I racked up a huge reputation simply by answering the way I answered. I didn't even know about the system until I had seven or eight dots under my name. Last edited by sirdarksol; May 1st, 2009 at 02:38 PM.

is it rep points that you want or do you want to be a moderator | Well.... since you did post the original question on "how do I get good reputation" I think that only you can answer your own question.
Just enjoy the forum, answer questions with advise that you have knowledge of and learn more of the things you do not know yet...
Its a wonderful community here whether you are a mod or not.. whether you have lots of reputation points.. or not. |

On a side note this was a great reminder for me to give out rep points. I know sometimes I forget to give credit where credit is due and this was a great reminder, Thanks. |
