Patience, practice, and experimentation. If they are adjustable on your camera, play with the aperture and shutter speed settings until you find the best combination for your environment. No one can really tell you what values to use for what settings, because each environment and each camera are going to be different.
As Lucy said, though 1 shot in 25 worth keeping isn't bad

It took me 50-60 shots to get a decent one when I first started... and I'm still around 1 in 20!
