Heater set at 70F, tank sitting at 86F

Temp strip stuck to outside of the tank says 86 - it's the highest number on the strip, and barely "glowing".

Heather (submersible, new) is set at 70F, which is it's lowest setting.

6gallon tank.

WHAT ?

I don't like the temp strips. Get a real thermometer for $2.

Already on that, Jaysee. Since I ordered the API test kit last night, I put a real thermometer on the order too. So it's on the way.

With no fish in the tank, I'm not overly concerned right at the moment. But am thinking about returning it and switching it for the 25-watt heater instead.

ETA : it's a 50-watt Marineland heater that's in right now.

ETA2 : will the extra heat slow down the cycling process ? Will it kill the bacteria ?

I have 50 watt heaters in my 5 gallon tanks. The extra wattage will keep your tank a little warmer than you set it at, because of the residual heat - It's still warm after it turns off. I've noticed the tanks to be 2 degrees higher than I set it for.

The warmer water carries less oxygen, and since the bacteria colonies you are trying to grow are aerobic, it could slow you down. Bringing the temp down a few degrees would be a good idea, if it is infact in the upper 80's.

Okay, I'll just hold up for a few days before I do anything then.

See if the new thermometer and an air pump help things. With any luck it's just a screwy temp. strip. But the water does feel very warm, so I doubt it's too far off.

I have an old (and never to be used again) basal thermometer here. Digital.

Stuck it in the water, and came up with 89.83F !!!!!!!!!!!!

That's HOT.

Looks like your heater is defective.

Yes. Marineland is replacing it.

Ive always been told that warmer water will cycle a little faster. I am sure there is a point though were the water can be too warm, somebody else might know what that temp is. But Ive seen recommendations during a fishless cycle to set it to the mid 80's.

I've read that you don't want to go any higher then 86.

The warmer temperature should encourage bacterial growth. Same thing when you grow bacteria in a lab, put it in the incubator at a temperature above room temp and the growth rate increases. Lower the temp and it slows down. Figure the same general principle applies to aquatic bacteria.
