My Stealth heater almost nuked the puffs....

I looked at my puffs today, and they looked starving, even though I'd just fed them last night! Their bellies were all shrunken in and stuff. And it was water change day, so I went to do the water change... and when I put my hand in the water it was really really warm! I looked at the thermometer and it was reading at least 86*!!! Not good! No wonder the poor things were starved, the high temps upped their metabolism! I did the water change with room temperature water to cool it down slowly. I run two heaters in that tank since it's a big one, one large heater and one small sort of backup heater. Of course it was the big one that blew. It was really hot to the touch. So I unplugged it and now I'm just waiting for temps to come down. Of course now there's only one smaller heater on that big tank... I am not happy though, I thought that the Stealths would be more reliable than that.... I've had some Petsmart brand heaters (topfin) for a year now and they still work great, but this 'nicer' one didn't even last half of that.... Hopefully there's some sort of warranty I can use to remedy the situation... I dunno if it's been too long already though.

-_-

*sigh*

I suggest you use several smaller heaters rather than one large. My brother has a 60 gallon and had one topfin 60 in there and this weekend he went out of town. i noticed all his fish where breathing hard and one was dead. well i reach in to grab him and it was like a hot tub. It was 96 deg. i added 4 air stones to cool of and aquarium salt to help respiratory but another one died. i had told him to use multiple heathers rather than one, i use 3 heathers in my 125. need less to say he lost his 2 favorite fish unfortunately. hope everything works out.

Yeah, I had two heaters in there... I'm just glad I caught it in time. That could have been really bad...

Oh man...shows that even the better heaters are not doing so hot. No pun intended...

I know, right? I'm tempted to just go buy another Petsmart brand heater...

Hello Pink. So glad you caught it in time. I've never had a problem with my Stealth heaters. I have 2 in my 155 and 1 in my 26g. Sometimes you just never know what you're actually getting. One of my heaters was missing the suction cups when it came in the mail. Needless to say I was a bit disturbed

Oh wow Pink, good thing you caught that!
Contact Marineland, I'm pretty sure they guarantee them for life.
Heater malfunction is one of my biggest fears.

I hope they do guarantee them for life. That was a big heater, and replacing it would not be cheap!

I had a heater do that once, it seemed stuck on and when I jiggled it it went back to a normal cycle. I should probably get a new one come to think of it. Just what brand?

Aw, I'm getting teary eyed... You were such a good mommy to them.

My little Ambellina has disappeared as well... I don't know what happened to her, didn't find a body, but she doesn't come up for food or to say hi either...

Awww..Pink that's so sad..I even loved Ambellina!!. Poor little girl. They are sooo small it's so hard to even find them when they are healthy and happy let alone sick. I ended up giving my 30 gallon hex away because I think of it as a death tank.

It's worse not knowing... at least if I found a body I'd know for sure, and I could give her a proper burial out behind the rose bushes with the rest of my beloved fishes (there's like a good 15 fish or so out there )
It is really hard to see them ever... tiny little things. It's just sad cause Ambellina used to be so scared of me, but I'd gotten to the point where she'd take food from me.
I know how you feel.... after I lose a fish I usually redo the whole tank decor...

Had the stealth 200w heater for 8 months in 60 gal hex. 6 hours after a feeding I found all my fish dead and the water temp was 100 degrees! The thermostat feature probably stuck on and cooked em'. I hadn't adjusted it since I first set it up. I urge all who have had this happen to them to register bad reviews at Amazon, Drs Foster and Smith, Big Al's etc... My 6 inch four year old Ghost Knife Dead and many others too. This is such a bad product. If it were killing puppies it would have made the news.

Hi welcome to FishLore
I'm sorry to hear about your fish.
Please check the dates on threads before replying. This one is almost 4 moths old.
It's great when we can share information and warn people about possible problems but you can do so by starting a new thread instead of resurrecting an old one.
Thanks!
