running two heaters

My 55 gallon tank has a 350 watt but it will not go above 83, I want it to goto 86 for my Discus, Will adding another 200 or so bring it up? Or will it just stay at 83 too? If I add another shouls I turn the first one down, or hows that work?

That size heater should bring the temp up higher than that. But a second heater will bring it up. Place one at each end of the tank preferably at the bottom of the tank under the over flow of the filter if it's HOB filter.
Keep a check on the temps for a couple of days to see what the temps are. I have two 200 watt heaters in my 75g with the temp at 84F

I got a 200 watt shatterproof one by Marineland. I have no idea what I should set it on, or if I should just leave the other one on high.I guess i'll just stick it in and let it set for 15 min and turn it on and go from there oh and the first heater is a 300 watt, not a 350.

Set them both on the same temp that way you have an even temp over the whole tank. They should shut off when the set temp is reached. One heater won't over work either.

The new heater is set to 86 and the old one just has notches from low to high, its as high as it will go. I can't tell when the new ones on, I dont see a light or anything.

The only thing I know to do is to float a thermometer in the tank and monitor the temp and move the setting on the heater up or down. I would give it over night/all day to get to a stable temp before adjusting the heaters.

Hi Ifixoldhouses. I have totally been in your situation before with the discus in the 55 gallon. I used 1x 250W Ebo Jager heater during the winter... but before I knew it, the single 250W couldn't keep up. I ended up adding another 250W Ebo Jager to keep the temp at 86F. Once I did, the temp stayed totally solid. Just a thought- I'd recommend these heaters to anyone. They are really reliable and accurate in my experience.

This is what I use

I like them because their stainless steel and the temp controller is on the outside.
The ones harpua202 uses are nice also.

I just put the new one in there and set it to 86, and its holding at 86 w/o touching the old heater. Those stealth heaters are nice, but you can't tell when its running or not is only drawback.

Well, you can't tell as easily. If you look at the sides of the unit, you could see gently swirling water around it as it heats.
