Water too warm?

I have a Cory, Glo Tetra, Zebra Snail, Swordtail and a Guppy. The temp is usually 78 degrees, but on warm days, it goes up to 80-81. My (used) heater is turned down all the way -- is this just a bad/old heater & is there one out there that is really good at regulating temps
I don't even know the brand of heater, I don't think I can find anything on it.

Hello ddog visi therm stealth heaters are recommended a good bit around here. I use them and have found them to be very accurate. During the summer months I always turn down my heaters but I don't turn them off. The temperature stays right around 79-80 degrees. However, I do have 155g to keep warm.

Bear in mind it's a heater, not a total temperature solution. By "warm days" i assume you mean warm weather. If that's the case then a hot day can certainly heat the tank past the heater's setting. My A/C went out in my apartment and the tank went to 82 degrees on one hot Philadelphia day.

Does your heater have a light on it to let you know when it's actually working? Both of mine do. The next time your temperature climbs to the low 80s, check that light. If it never clicks on, your heater's doing fine.

Just think of it like your central air in your house. If you have the thermostat set at 72 degrees, but for the heater not the A/C, it's not going to keep your house cool on a hot day, it just means the heater doesn't actually fire up. Same thing with any brand aquarium heater.

EagleScout's advice sounds perfect. I just wanted to add that 80 - 81 is perfectly fine and nothing to worry about.
