Ok, so I think I killed my heater. It's an Aquaclear brand heater. When I drained my tank I forgot it was plugged in and it was left running for some time out of water. I started smelling something funny.... then realized what happened. The white part on the glass on the bottom half has turned brown. I'm assuming it's no good now and I'll have to buy another one. What do you guys think?

I'd say toss it, sorry PFP, I know they're expensive.
Petmountain has visi-therm stealths for a really reasonable price. I've never ordered from them but my petsmart matched the price. It's got a safety shut off if left out of water.

Your petsmart matched? They were like almost $40 in the store. What did you do, just tell them the price, or print out the page...?

I called and spoke to the manager. At first he said they don't match on line prices.
I told him that was a shame, I'd love to give him my business but since I could order them cheaper I'd be ordering elsewhere.
That's when he said to print out the ad and he'd match it.
I saved $21.00 on one ($42.00 since I bought two) Shipping would have been extra, but still less expensive than petsmart.

If it turned brown, something in there burned...likely the wiring. I wouldn't think it was safe in water any more, a little too likely to fry something - like fish, or you.

I had bought a Hydor Theo recently and it turned out it didn't work, and I had to buy a new heater - they are pricey aren't they? I got a Rena Smart heater (only one at Petland that was completely submersible, that was pretty important to me, hate the semi-submersibles) and I had to pay $40 for it - but WOW! I have never had a heater so precise! it doesn't fluctuate by even half a degree! I'm glad now I spent the money, I want to have a really good heater.

Good news! I have a 50W that came with a used tank I bought, and I put it in just to tide me over until I can get a new one, but it's holding the tank at a steady 82*! Maybe I won't have to buy a new one after all

what size is the tank?
I got a heater like that before, it was cracked on the side and after the day i set it up there was water boiling inside it...
