Heating a tank in a cold room....

I have been thinking of getting a small tank for my desk at work since I litterally sit at my dest for 15 hours a day (on my long days). It would be really nice to have some fishies here with me My only question is this....

My dance studio is in a warehouse building and the temps can go down to 40 degrees when it gets really cold. Will a heater keep the tank warm enough or will I end up killing fish when it gets too cold?

you may want to consider getting a heater rated for a larger tank, but if you do that i wouldn't get anything but a marineland visi-therm (depending on the size of the tank), my other heaters need to be adjusted fairly regularly but the visi-therms do wonderfully. you shouldnt have to worry about it overheating the tank unless it malfunctions, since the temperature gauge will turn off the heater when it hits the correct temperature, but i'd keep a close eye on it for at least the first few weeks.

I’m going to suggest that you consider two heaters. If by small you mean 10 gallons then two 50W heaters.

Two reason I suggest this…

1. Should either heater fail the second heater will be powerful enough to maintain the temperature.

2. With such a low room temperature one heater is going to be working hard (constantly on) to maintain the water temperature. By spreading the work load between two heaters it will greatly extend the life of the heaters.

Also be doubly sure to eliminate "dead" zones and have thorough (not necessarily strong) to prevent cold spots.
