Tank too warm

Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. My 55gl tank is too warm for my liking and i cant seem to get it to drop down any. It hovers around 78-80 degrees. I would like it to go to about 76. My heater is set at the lowest setting which is about 70. It has auto shut off and it glows when it is heating. My tank sits in my computer room and the house heater is usually sitting at about 68-72. we have vents in the celing for heating and cooling but we have the vent in the computer room closed (cause of the tank) So my question is how do I get my temp down and get it to stay that way? Or is 78-80 ok for my future fish? The tank is (fishless) cycling right now so no worries about lost lives! My future babies will be mollies, swordtails, gouramis ect. Standard community fish. Any help would be greatly welcome!

Unplug the heater, give it a few hours and see what the temp is. You may have a malfunctioning heater.

welcome to fishlore!!!
those temps will be fine for the fishies you want
matter of fact, if you crank up the heater to about 86 or so,because you are fishless, the cycle will move along a bit faster ...then turn it down to the 78-80 when the cycle is done

depending on the kind of fish you have (i.e. tropical) 78-80 is a perfect temp for them

I agree with the above posters....I have all of my tanks set at about 80 degrees. But like shawnie said, turn your heater up during cycling and it can help speed things along.

Rushing is ok..as long as you don't put fish in there. ..I rushed all my tanks..I put seeded media in there, raised the temp, left the lights on longer, added ammonia every 12 hours..lol...I was in a hurry.

LOL I'm using biozyme to speed things along because i'm a little nervous about using ammonia. Knowing my luck i'd do it wrong!

Is biozyme some kind of bacteria that you add to your tank??
There are products that work but Tetra Safe Start is the only freshwater product that I know of that has the right kind of bacteria, the other kinds claim to cycle the tank but have the wrong kind and will hurt the cycle..The wrong bacteria use all the ammonia in the tank and starve the good bacteria
