Heater Q

I'm getting my sister a betta for her birthday, so I'll be taking my 2-15 gallon heater out of my mollie's 10 gallon and putting it in the betta's 5 gallon. I have another heater, but I have 2 questions about it:

#1: My grandmother brought me the heater with her 29 gallon tank, so will it be too powerful for a 10 gallon?

#2: It doesn't have setting for certain temperatures, just a knob that you turn to make the temperature higher or lower, so how do I get it to the correct temperature without killing my fish by experimenting?

1) How nice of your grandmomther. It depends on the watt of the heater.

2) Test it. I bought a used tank that came with 2 heaters. I filled an old 5g tank added a thermometer and played around with the heater. I recorded the temp and position of the knobs.

Does your sister know about the Betta or is it a surprise?

It's a surprise, but she has been asking for it. I got her one last year and she LOVED him, but unfortunately he died after a few months because she forgot to de-chlorinate the water.

If the heater heats 4 gallons to 78 degrees at a certain setting, will it heat 10 gallons to the same temperature on the same setting?

How do I find out the wattage? It wasn't in a box because she had used it before.

I don't know, I'm sure it probably depends on the wattage.
You can try calling the manufacturer and ask how to tell how many watts it is.

It sounds sort of like the one I got from tetra. you could just let it sit in the room temp tank with the dial set at about the midrange. after a 30 hour plug it in and keep an eye on it I think the thermosat kind of sets itself at that base range in the 1st half hour and moves from there. but I could be wrong.
