It dropped today from about 76 to 70 during the day, when i feel the heater though it still feels warm! Could this be caused by the fact that the house heater was off during the day? Would this change the fish tank's temp so much?

It sounds like you have a faulty heater, I'd replace it asap.

Or it could be under sized.
What size is the tank and how many watts is the heater?
