Faulty heater?

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Marineland 10-watt stealth submersible heater, all set up according to the directions it came with. Bluntly, it didn't do anything- it was cold to the touch when turned on and under water. The water's temperature is hanging at 60 degrees, far below the factory-set turn off temp (78)

Thinking that perhaps I had done something wrong, I went back and exchanged it for another one- and this one is doing the same- a whole lot of nothing.

Has anyone found tricky trouble-shooting with this heater?

The only problem I've had with the stealth heater was user error.

I had put the heater in and then set the temp.
If I recall correctly the directions say to set the heater to the desired temp then put it in the tank and plug it in.
Once I did that, they were fine.

With that said, all my stealths...I have 4 running have to be set a few degrees higher than the actual temp I want.

How long did you give it to heat the water and what watt are you using for what size tank?

It's a factory preset, so I can't exactly set the temperature. Does the water need to be the desired temperature at start up?

I'm using a 3 gal heater for 3 gal of water. At this rate, I'll just return the heater and put out the gas money for the trip to a store with a more powerful one.

Oh, sorry, I missed where you were using the 10W. I've only got 50w and 75W. They're adjustable.

For the 3g you might want to try the 25W. It's adjustable and I didn't think it was strong enough for my 5g. so it might be good for 3g.

It should heat the water by itself.

yeah, as Lucy said try the 25 watt, that has an adjuster on it.

They were out of the 25 watt Marineland, so I got a 50 watt Elite that's being working fine. I set it up 24 hours ago and have been slowly raising the temperature- it's at 76 now. I think I'll hold it at 80.

I found out what went wrong with the others- someone had dropped the box during shipping and the whole shipment of heaters went South. I used the $33 store credit from the bad heater to get the Elite and a little hidey-log for whatever inhabits the tank. As far as I can tell it's done cycling, so it should be put to use soon.
