Raising Temperature of tank .. ?

I am redoing an existing tank ? I believe the heather in it is broke. I have bought 2 new heathers. I am waiting for delivery.
The tank is at a constant 72 F. I want to raise it to about 75 F. I do not want to hurt existing fish.
Do I have to set heater to 72 F, put it in water, wait a day, pull it out, set to 73 F, put it back in, etc......

you can just adust a degree every few hours without taking it out..you never want to remove a heater from a tank when its hot..it will shatter

Should I pull up heater so the adjuster is barely out of water or reach a couple of inches into water and adjust it.

as long as the glass portion is mostly covered by the water, lifting it up to just the adjuster is out, is ok
