Heater making clicking noises. Help.

I'm currently cycling an aquarium and everything seems fine, but my heater is making weird clicking noises when it turns on. It seems to be doing fine at actually heating the aquarium at a constant temp, but the clicking noise is driving me nuts. I can't seem to find a cause for it.

I can't really describe it beyond a loud clicking sound, but if I put my hand in near the heater I can feel a small pulsing in the water, like a shockwave. It's not a rhythmic, constant clicking, but I'd say on average it clicks about once every 2 seconds. It's loud enough to wake me up at night.

Any ideas on what's causing this?

The heater is an All-Glass 100 watt heater.

Sounds like a bad heater unfortunately.... All-Glass is notorious for cheap heaters.... BE VERY CAREFUL as it could have an electrical problem by the sounds of it, I would unplug it, take it out, and go get a new one.... preferably a better brand, you dont want to go cheap with something as important as your heater

Edit: Also dont forget to let it cool for a little while (in the tank) after you unplug it

Yup your heater is dying. I dropped one in underwater that wasn't submersible...dried it out & the clicking sound drove me nuts too. The tank was on the bedside table on my side of the bed.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll try returning it to the store. It came as part of a kit, so hopefully I can get a replacement without having to return everything!

I hope you were able to return the heater. Sounds like it had become a shocking hazard and probably would've killed any fish put in the aquarium.

I was able to return it. They just swapped it with another one in-store, although not the same brand as they didn't have them available seperately. The new one's been working great so far.

Sorry for the bump but this thread is exactly what I've been looking for! I have an all-glass heater too and ever since I set up my tank, I've been hearing this clicking/popping sound. And I've been thinking its my tank or my stand and I've been freaking out. Even though the heater keeps the tank fine, looks like I'll need to replace it, the sound is driving me nuts!
