I just bought a new visa therm stealth 100watt yesterday. At first it got the temp up to 80 but now it wont break 76, whats the deal? Does it shut itself of sometimes? Or do i need to exchange it?

how large is your tank? What temperature do you have it set at?

Hmm.. a 100w is WAY strong for a 10g tank. It should keep the water a good bit warmer than the temp set on the dial. Sounds like a defective one maybe.

i vote defective. 100w is big, but not so big that It might be overheating itself...especially after it WAS working properly but isn't anymore.

Ok well now i have it turned to 82, and it will only get up to 80. So basically it is always 2 less than what the dial is...Is this ok or should i get a new one?

Nah, pretty simple, dial is turned to the #82, the temp reads 80 at all times. And before i had it set to 80, the temp would always read 78. So like i said the heater is always warming the water to 2 degrees less than it is set to at all times....so should i bring it back? the package says it is accurate up to about a one degree difference. So that means the one i have is accurate up to a 2 degree difference. Is this ok or should i bring it back. I don't want it to get worse i guess so i prob. should take it back huh?

I think the dial is set wrong...it has nothing to do with the thermostats accuracy. It's still holding the temperature within 1 degree of what it's set to...it's just lying about what it's set to.

All it takes is the factory worker or machine (whichever they use to assemble their heaters) to have it one hashmark off and Tavel would be correct... so the chances are that is what is going on.
