Over-Heater

I bought a heater for my 35g tropical tank back in May. The problem is that I can't keep my temp down. I have it at its lowest setting and it is reading currently at 85F. This is too high for the fish I have in my tank. The problem is that it seems that when the outdoor temp decreases, my tank increases. How do I keep it down without having to get a new heater? If I were to get a new heater, it would only be a 30g heater and then I risk the temp being too low. I figured that I should buy big that way I wouldn't risk having it go out as fast. What should I do?

I have the same problem in one of my 30G except it is the hardware that came with it. I am going to buy a 30G heater soon. I would suggest a visitherm stealth heater. They are very reliable. I have 3 of them. You can get them at DFS cheapest from what I've looked up.

What wattage is the heater? What temp. does the tank water stay around with the heater off?

its a 200W topfin heater. i am going to Petsmart tonight should I just get a heater specified for 30g?
The temp was at 68F in the fall when my heater somehow shut off before I caught it.

I would go with another 200W.
I would also go with another brand than TopFin.
Visitherm or EboJager.

or should I get a 30g I think 150W to prevent this overheating again?

the problem is the topfin brand, not the wattage. topfin is just not good. The thermostats work alright for a while but will stick on more as they age. Eventually, they won't ever shut off and you'll boil some fish.

not to mention, after a while the paint starts to flake off and that CAN'T be good for the fish.

Like someone suggested, go with a better brand that has a calibrated thermostat. (I like marineland's visitherm because they're plastic and won't crack).
