A verticle setup is fine. Turn it up gradually till your tank temperature gets where it needs to be. Try not to exceed a degree or two change/day.

It sounds from the link you provided that it can be adjusted. Automatic means that it holds the temperature you set and a separate controller is not needed... or am I missing something here.

According to the link, this should maintain temperature at 78. It is either defective or inadequate to heat your tank (possibly due to ambient temperature). Is it constantly running?

Sounds like it isn't strong enough. You probably need a larger or second heater.

Unfortunately, that particular heater would probably only work in a 10-15 gallon tank at best. The "10 gallon" model actually works great for little 2 gallon tanks but never gets a 10-gallon up to 78 on it's own.

or

in 100w should work much better for your 30g tank.
