Two littles instead of one big?

I got an old heater when I bought a used 55 gallon tank and I've been using it but it seems to not be adjustable. It keeps the water at a toasty 84 degrees and boiled all my fish. If I use 2 heaters that were meant for a ten gallon, will they work okay, or will I have to go buy a heater meant for a 55?,

Re: Two littles instead of one big?

well i think it would take a while for it to heat up and maintain it ...you could get to heaters made for a 20 ...i think the lowest you want to go tis somting rated for 40 gallon...but wait for some more posts...but i dont think the two tens would be good idea...if you can afoard it ...get the marineland visi-therm sealth heater...very dependable ...and is within one degree acurate..with heater the more you pay the better ..it pays off in the long run becuase it cost more to replace heaters the failed and plus the fish it might of fryed...i would recomend the marine land visi-therm stealth if its in the buget though...and iim sure ohter members have some other great suggestions also.

feel free to ask anytihng..

I agree...2 heaters rated at 10 gallons each is probably not enough for a 55 gallon tank. The suggestion on the visi-therm stealth heater is a good one. I have 3 of them and they work great. Skim through the forums a bit and you will find many other members who have also had great luck with them.

Re: Two littles instead of one big?

I keep 2 submersible heaters in my 75 gallon tank, one heater at each side of the tank. I need 300W in my tank, so my 2 heaters are 150W each. The advantage of 2 heaters like that is that if one breaks, the other one is still working and gives you some extra time to get another heater in place of the broken one.

With the one heater still working, how would you know the other wasn't?

LOL, by the indicator light If indicator light is turning on and off in both heaters, that means both are working. Unless, you get submersible heaters without the indicator light. In that case, you have no way of knowing which heater is broken or even when it's broken. But a sudden drop in temperature should indicate one is broken.

I have 2 Visi-Therm heaters without the indicator lights, lol. But they're supposedly so good that they have a life warranty, which means if one breaks, you get a new one for free from the company that makes them. Sounds like a good deal to me.
