Emergency!!!!
The heater in my 2.5gal tank went bad and now the temp is 90, the room is about 78/80. How do I lower the temp?

In a bag and let it float and it will help cool it off. Make sure the heater is out also.

Re: Emergency!!!!
If you took out the heater, leave out the ice, it will cool off naturally and not put the fish into shock because of sudden temp change.

Re: Emergency!!!!
I did not have any ice so I used about a 1/4 cup of cold water in a bag. The fish are doing fine, I really think they are going to be fine. In the morning I am going to pick up a new heater.

Re: Emergency!!!!
i recomend the visi therm stealth heater...more expenisive but reliable ...idk if they make them for that small of a tank though..but i guess theres not point in spending a ton of money for that size tank...lol dont mind me ....yeha i had a issue like that also with the heater that came with my 20gal starter kit ...it was petcos store brand i think im not sure though it said all glass aquarium on it..idk if thats there store brand or a brand lol...but it was very off...ever since day one....i started like 5 degrees and it got higher and higer it go to the point were i had it at 67 and it went to 87.. ...and with my visi therm stealth...it costed a little more...but it reall is within one degree acurate...ii sound like a visi-therm bilboard

Re: Emergency!!!!
The fish are doing fine...I did take back the 2.5gal, a friend gave me a new all-glass 5.5gal. Bought a new heater(tetra),filter(whisper) bubble wand,Plants. I used the filter old filter pad, the gravel and water from the 2.5gal and toped it off with water from my cycled 10gal, and then toped off the 10gal with new water. The fish are doing alot better.
Thanks everyone for you info

Re: Emergency!!!!
With such a small tank, they dont really make heaters to accommodate, so what i suggest, buy the smallest heater you can find, and just insert only half ot (the part with the heat coils) into the tank. That way your tank wont over heat. You may need to play around with it before you get it to the right temp.

Won't that cause the heater to overheat and break? I thought thats why they had the "water line" line.... I know I forgot to unplug my heater in my 20 gallon tank during a water change, and it fried it. (and it was only out of water for maybe 5 minutes.

Re: Emergency!!!!
I was given a 5.5 gal tank w/set up. so all is well. as for having part of the heater out of the water I just would not do that I would not want to risk burning out the heater.

Re: Emergency!!!!
hey fish girl
dont listen to b0n3ZA if you dont put the heater in properly it will eventually break. if the tank is to small for a small heater then u should seriously think about gettin a slightly bigger tank for ur wet friends.
but if u can find one small enough ask at your local pet shop. good luck to you.
let me know how you go
cheers,
Bryn

Re: Emergency!!!!
Bryn, Yea I took back the 2.5gal tank, after mt friend gaving me a 5.5gal tank w/set up. I used some of the garvel and water from my 10 gal tank. the 5.5gal is still cycling with a cory and a male platy. and both of my tanks are planted.
