Day 1 - 6/7/08 - Let's start with the Apsito gang
Panda, Oddball and Oasis

This is the first post in my 48gal Journal, so I thought I'd introduce you to the biggest characters in the tank - the 3 Apistos. I have 2 Female Panda apistogrammas in this tank, namely Oddball and Panda. My male, Oasis, is currently swimming around in my 7.5gal tank going through his quarantine period. Oasis is a real poser, and in the short time I've had him I've got some really good shots. Every morning when his light goes on, he swims out of his cave and proceeds to 'yawn' and stretch his fins. He's a real joy to watch in the morning, the 7.5gal being just on my bedside table. Panda and Oddball have a real tale to tell. I was at the LFS buying them, and I asked for one male and one female. The guy proceeded to net out the birghtest female, and one without spots. "That's a female with stress colours" I said, but he ensured me it was a male in non breeding colours. Now, this shop being my best LFS I believed him. So, not knowing I had 2 females, I went home and quarantined them in the 12gal tank on my desk. During this time, Oddball was definetly the dominant one, Panda was hding at the back in the Hornwort for 2 weeks! I decided to introduce Panda 1 day before Oddball to hoepfully even things out. Well, all went smoothly until I introduced Oddball. Oddball developed a spot! I thought she was a wonky female, and I was right, because further research revealed that the male's pelvic fins are plain yellow, wherass the females are black with yellow tips. Oddball had black with yellow tips. So, I proceeded to look for a male... Well, anyway, the morning after I added Oddball, I saw the two swimming together. Then, Panda disappeared! I thought Oddball had killed her! After a period of 2 days frantic and worried searching, I found Panda swimming at the front... Recently, I 'lost' Oddball for 2 days, but when I finnaly decided to look in the filter, I take the lid of and "Rescue me!" Silly little thing, she had somehow got into the Hatchet proof (Don't ask... That will be in a later post) filter! I had to remove all the media, (With all the poo in it escaping into the main tank so I had a gunked tank!) then usher out of the outlet pipe... Crazy fish, and boy do they keep me on my toes!

That's about it for today, I'll update you one the Apistos progress as soon as Oasis finds a way into the 48gal!

Day 51 - 25/8/08 - Apisto update, and proof Hatchets don't like small numbers.
Filter tragedy's, 'Hatchet disease', and LFS raids!

So, since my first post in this blog, 5 days have passed. Yes, I'm very stupid for not updating it! Well, sad news first. The filter has since inhaled Panda, Oddball, Oasis and another male apisto. I have finally found the way they got in though! Through the top. I have 1 female Panda left (Survivor), and a male in QT. Hopefully they will make a pair. Survivor is very cute, she is sort of chunky, and I rescued her because she had some fin damage. She's healed up great! The male is BIG and hopefully will make a good companion for Survivor.

I have since lost all the hatchets to 'Hatchet disease'. I have not have chance to replenish the school since the mini cycle I had a little while ago. I guess this killed a few, and the stress of tiny numbers gave the rest 'Hatchet disease', where they get fin rot symptoms, and loose control of their swimming. I have no idea how to cure it - and sadly I have 0 hatchets left. I'm going to give it a few months, then get 8 and make sure all their old problems (Filter, Platys out competing them for food) don't exist anymore. Hatchets in small numbers are IMPOSSIBLE to keep happy I tell you.
