Hatchetfish

Hi, I am starting a new 20 gallon tank and wanted to put a school of hatchetfish in it, but I am concerned about having them try to fly out the tank everytime I change the water or vacuum the gravel.* Has anyone had any experience with these fish?

Re: Hatchetfish

They are quite the jumpers.
make sure you have a tight fitting hood on their tank.
Having some sort of floating plant seems to help calm them down.
Also, I have found turning their tank light off, while leaving a room light on, is the best way to work ontheir tank.

Yeah, I lost one when I was vacuming. Nonetheless they're still great aquisitions, but just keep your eye on them when the top is off.

Are they easy to keep? They're quite expensive here and I dont want to just buy a few and have them die...

The marbled variety looks wild, I'd get some when I get a bigger tank

Re: Hatchetfish

They really do best in schools no smaller than 5.
Which means a minimum of a 20 gallon tank.

They also do best with a tank with a larger surface area, not narrow tansk , like the regular 55 or standard 20's and 30's.
