It really depends on your tank and your fish, but they would certainly be happier with more of their kind. Most fish school out of fear, when they are spooked by another fish in the tank or something in your house that moves quickly etc. But they will for sure be happier to shoal and hang with more of their kind, and have more security (peace of mind within their group) while schooling in a larger group.

They should school together with the old ones.

I also think they should school together I am in the same situation as you, lol. I have 2 adult Harlequins and 4 young ones (in a Q tank) waiting to be added to the school of 2 adult ones to make a group of 6 (for now). I believe the larger the school of Harlequins, the more beautiful they look

I have 8 at the moment and they don't all school all the time. They are usually all over the tank. Just give them time, it will take quite a bit of time for the older ones to get used to and accept the new ones as friends.

Yup! Another agreeing that it'll take time. You are lucky there isn't any aggression ,ine fought with each other. From the 8 harlequins i bought at different times i have 4.

Not sure how similar the behavior of Harlequins is to tetras, but after about 3 weeks my Pristellas are finally starting to hang together. I added 4 to the tank back in Nov. 24th, they stuck together but just recently started following the older one I've had for a year. The new ones acted like they weren't sure what to do about a fish that looked like them, but was over twice their size.
